For most rhinoplasty patients who want to reshape their nose, a traditional surgical nose job will be the right course of action. Some patients, however, only require subtle corrections; for such people, a nonsurgical rhinoplasty may be all that’s needed. This procedure, which originated in the early 19th century, involves using fillers to make minor adjustments to a patient’s nose without requiring scalpels, anesthesia, or major recovery time.
When a Liquid Nose Job is Appropriate
Since nonsurgical rhinoplasty is not meant to totally redesign your nose, it can only be used to make cosmetic adjustments. If you have issues with how your nose functions or want to change your nose in a way that requires access to the nasal framework, this procedure isn’t for you. However, it can save you a great deal of time and money if you are generally happy with how your nose looks, but want to make some minor adjustments.
The most common requests that require a liquid nose job are fixing small dents or bumps, straightening out a crooked appearance, and raising the nasal bridge. Bumps or dents can result from trauma or injuries, and a crooked appearance or low nasal bridge can result from simple genetics.
How a Liquid Nose Job Works
This procedure involves injecting fillers into your nose in the necessary spots, sort of like getting Botox. There are several fillers that a surgeon can choose from, including Juvederm, Radiesse, Perlane, Silikon-1000, Restylene, and Sculptra. Your doctor will make their choice based on your needs and their own personal preference.
Once a filler is selected and prepared, the doctor will inject it into the target area slowly and carefully to add more volume to the area. Afterward, the doctor will use his fingers to mold the filler to create the proper shape so that it will blend in with the rest of the nose and face. This method allows the doctor to fill in any dents, smooth out bumps or crooked nasal bridges, or elevate the nasal bridge while still maintaining a natural looking nose.
Advantages of a Liquid Nose Job
While there are benefits and advantages to both surgical and nonsurgical rhinoplasty, there are some that may cause you to favor nonsurgical. Generally speaking, nonsurgical rhinoplasty is less stressful because it is a much simpler process. Nonsurgical rhinoplasty takes much less time to perform than surgical rhinoplasty. The former takes approximately 15 minutes to complete, while the latter can take two or more hours. There’s almost no recovery needed for nonsurgical rhinoplasty (a few days), while recovery from surgical rhinoplasty can take as long as two years. Nonsurgical isalso much cheaper; a surgical rhinoplasty on average costs about $7,000, while a nonsurgical rhinoplasty filler runs about $750.
Some other advantages include the flexibility surrounding the procedure. Fillers used in nonsurgical rhinoplasty can be removed or relocated in necessary. They can also be used as a visual aid if you are considering getting surgical rhinoplasty; you can see what your nose might look like once you have the procedure. They can also provide minor touch-ups to a previous surgical rhinoplasty so that you can avoid going back to the doctor for a revision rhinoplasty.
Liquid Nose Job Limitations
As we stated above, this procedure is designed for small, subtle changes to the appearance of your nose. It cannot change the way your nose functions or do a drastic overhaul on the way your nose looks. It also does not work on every patient. Some patients have weak cartilage that would not be able to support additional weight and volume from a filler. Liquid nose jobs are also not a permanent solution. Like other cosmetic fillers, they need to be reapplied every twelve to eighteen months.
